Joy and Sadness

So I’m feeling a few contradictory emotions at the moment.

And Sadness.

I’m feeling joy because I graduated from University today. The stress of everything has been lifted from my shoulders. I am so happy to be finished.

Now why am I sad?

I’m working on my manuscript and my main character is so depressed because of the death of her younger brother. I’m trying to write all the feelings out and I’ve begun to feel how she’s feeling. It’s one of the cool things about being a writer. You can feel how these people actually are feeling as they come into being.

I’m glad that I have the chance to write because I have begun to understand different points of view better.

Happy writing! And good luck to those finishing the last few days of Camp NaNoWriMo!

Role Plays

I have learned that I love to role play with my characters. There’s so much that you can learn from your characters when you put them in a different situation. Since I currently have three going on, I’m a little obsessed I have to admit. It’s so much fun to see how my characters react to characters of my friends. The novels become better because I now know how a character would act and I learn things that I would not have learned otherwise.

So if you get the chance to role play, do it! It’s fun, free, and you learn a lot.

Epic Dreams

Do you ever get those dreams that are so intense that you find yourself thinking about them later? I wrote about the dream that helped me to understand a character better, a few posts ago. It was super epic and I’m excited to have that story play out.

I had another epic dream for this same book, just the other night. It probably came because I’d just seen the new Captain America movie. In the dream, my character was on a chase through an FBI building. I just love dreams like this 🙂

Happy writing!

Character Sketches

So I’m working on some character sketches for Book 1, using the character sketch template in Scrivener.  In doing the sketch for my villain, I reached the point where the template asks for habits/mannerisms. I had to laugh as I wrote down Torture and murder.

The next thing that made me laugh was when I started doing the sketch for my main character’s sister. The template asks for occupation. Well this character is absent for most of the novel due to a curse so I put down Missing in Action: Cursed.

Basically, it’s fun to do these sketches because there is so much that we can learn from looking at characters in this way. Since the characters are the ones who really bring about the story, it’s great to learn more about them.

Happy writing!

Coolest Thing Happened

Okay, so in the Mirrors trilogy that I’m working on occasionally (the sci-fi/fantasy mix), there is a character that I really did not understand.  He appears in all three books and I originally believed that he was supposed to be a love interest for another character. Then I realized through role playing that she could not stand him.

So I got to thinking: Who is this guy really?

The answer came through an epic dream. Not only do I know who he is and what his motivations are but I now know the way the series will end!

I’m so excited :).

Write and plot. The characters will let you know where to go :).
